Choosing your massage oil

Oil is what turns rubbing into gliding. It lets your hands travel slowly and smoothly, keeps skin comfortable, and makes every technique in Rubly feel better. You don't need anything fancy — one good bottle covers months of massages.

Easy first choices

Fractionated coconut oil — light, odorless, washes out of towels easily. The best all-rounder.
Sweet almond oil — the spa classic; a little richer and warmer. Skip it if either of you has a nut allergy.
Jojoba — technically a wax, very close to the skin's own oils; lovely and non-greasy.
Grapeseed — light, inexpensive, easy to find.
No oil at hand? A plain unscented body lotion works for a short massage.

Essential oils — carefully

Lavender or similar scents are lovely, but essential oils are concentrated: never apply them pure. Add 2–3 drops to a few tablespoons of a base oil from the list above, and skip scents entirely on sensitive or broken skin.

Do a patch test

New bottle? Rub a drop on the inside of the forearm and wait fifteen minutes. Any redness or itching — choose a different oil.

How much to use

Start with a coin-sized amount warmed between your palms.
Add a little more as you go — it's easier to add than to work through a puddle.
Never pour cold oil straight onto skin; always warm it in your hands first.

The practical bit

Lay a towel under your partner — oil and bedsheets are not friends. Oily towels wash out fine in a warm cycle.
